Quote: Robin McBryde set for Scarlets coaching role McBryde in talks with Scarlets Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde says he hopes to be named Scarlets forwards coach before the start of the season.
McBryde is set to succeed ex-Scarlets skipper Simon Easterby who is to stay on as part of the the coaching reshuffle at Parc Y Scarlets.
"Nothing has been finalised," said former Llanelli captain McBryde.
"Discussions are taking place so I think the intention is to work with the Scarlets when I'm not involved with the Union and marry up the two jobs."
Coach Nigel Davies is yet to reveal his new-look backroom staff following the exit of defence coach John Muggleton.
McBryde, who played 250 games for Llanelli and the Scarlets as hooker between 1994 and 2005, was on the Scarlets coaching staff after retiring from playing.
The 37-times capped Welshman, part of Wales' 2005 Grand Slam winning squad, helped coach the Scarlets under-18 team during the 2005-2006 season before his appointment as Wales forwards coach in 2006.
Warren Gatland kept McBryde on in Wales' coaching team after Gareth Jenkins' departure as McBryde was part of the backroom team that guided Wales to the 2008 Grand Slam Championship.
606: DEBATE Robin McBryde does seem to be out of his depth (maybe an understatement) for Wales, but maybe at regional it will be more his level, I suppose it can't hurt the Scarlets
Smirnoffpriest McBryde coached the Wales team on their 2009 summer tour to North America as Gatland, Shaun Edwards and Rob Howley were part of Ian McGeechan's British and Irish Lions backroom staff on tour to world champions South Africa.
Wales defence coach Edwards has a dual role as he is the head coach of London Wasps and McBryde is, likewise, going to juggle both of his jobs.
When the 40-year-old is appointed at Parc y Scarlets, it is to be his first coaching position at senior club level.
McBryde will have a tough job as the Scarlets' defence were criticised last term as the Welsh region suffered a disappointing season and failed to qualify for the Heineken Cup through the Magners League.
Davies' team only qualified for European rugby's premier competition after winning a Heineken Cup reprieve thanks the Cardiff Blues winning the Amlin Challenge Cup. |
