Chance to buy a piece of Llanelli history
OK, any bets on where this ball will end up. I'd be surprised if it isn't in the Scarlets Museum before you can say 'nine three'. Or will Cuddy buy it so that he can taste the sweet smell of victory. http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/news/ ... ticle.html | | | | Quote: THE All Blacks couldn't get their hands on it enough but now some lucky collector will be able to hold on to it for good.
The rare opportunity to own the match ball which was used in Llanelli's never-to-be-forgotten victory over the All Blacks in 1972 has arisen.
Margaret Richards, 62, of Derwen Street, won the ball in a raffle on the day of the game and has now decided to put it up for auction — almost 38 years after the historic result. The ball has been kept in a sideboard at her home but could now be worth a couple of thousand pounds.
Kicked over the Stradey Park posts by Andy Hill (penalty) and Phil Bennett (conversion), as well as being touched down by Roy Bergiers amid a maelstrom of scarves and Sospan Fachs for the game's only try, the ball was at the heart of the 9-3 victory.
Mrs Richards explains: "I went to the game with my first husband, I've still got the programme. "While there I bought a raffle ticket and I couldn't believe it but I won the match ball after the game.
"It's part of the biggest day in Llanelli's history. Whenever the game is mentioned on television or in the press it's exciting to think I have a part of it in my house." Mrs Richards confessed the autographed Gilbert ball has never been given pride of place. "It's been kept in a cupboard all these years because we never really got around to putting it out on display.
"My husband is a former captain of Furnace rugby club and we did ask them to display it but they wouldn't put it in a locked cabinet.
"I have no idea how much it is worth but am anxious to find out. I've decided to put it up for auction."
Graham Budd, a specialist auctioneer in the field of sporting memorabilia, who handles sales for Sotheby's, said the find was very exciting.
"Usually items connected to Grand Slams and Lions tours attract a lot of interest but this was a huge occasion, a fantastic day that and a historic day," he said.
"I'm sure it would attract a lot of interest, especially if it is signed by both teams." Former Llanelli, Wales and Lions great Phil Bennett said: "I wish her luck. There's some great names on that ball and I'm sure it is worth a packet.
"It would be fantastic if the Scarlets could buy it for their museum or if it went to a supporter so it's kept in the area." | | | | |

So, in the end Llanelli's staunchest fans will sell them down the line.

Very profound comment there Zebby m'boy, very!! Haven't a clue what it means but............ very, very profound! Mind you, with regard to selling Grannies knickers? .......... I think the aroma of Arbroath Smokies, fresh from the kippers smoke sheds, is a preferable option! Purely a personal preference but I'd admit, Blackpool Bloaters, run the knickers a close second!!

Re: Chance to buy a piece of Llanelli history
Purely interest: The teams on the day............
Llanelli : Roger Davies; J.J.Williams, Roy Bergiers, Ray Gravell, Andy Hill; Phil Bennett, Chico Hopkins; Tony Crocker, Roy Thomas, Barry Llewellyn, Delme Thomas (capt), Derek Quinnell, Tom David, Hefin Jenkins, Gareth Jenkins. Replacements: Selwyn Williams, Alan James, Chris Charles, Brian Llewellyn, Gwyn Ashby, Meirion Davies.
New Zealand All Blacks: Joe Karam; Bryan Williams, Bruce Robertson, Mark Sayers, Duncan Hales; Bob Burgess, Lindsey Colling; Keith Murdoch, Ron Urlich, Graham Whiting, Andy Haden, Pole Whiting, Alistair Scown, Alan Sutherland, Ian Kirkpatrick (capt). Replacement: Grant Batty.
Again, for the sake of argument/debate/interest........ I've underlined the players from both sides who I reckon were at least International class and added italics to the underline for 'world-class' (NOT, World's BEST!!) - Purely my choice based on memory but, feel free to differ by all means!! (By the way, I, was there!!) Underlined ALL the AB's for obvious reasons!! That was near as dammit (with Grant Batty) a full international side! Truth is, (despite the snide comments that may come later) that was one HELL of an All Black side!! One hell of an achievement, whichever way you cut the cake! Historic victory, unlikely to be repeated by any non-International side in today's game!!
Keith Murdoch Hard if not impossible to pin this feller!! Reputed to be a man blessed with inordinate strength (apparently, moreso than Colin Meads!) but records show he also abused that strength on and off the field! Also allegedly, an alcoholic while a capped International!! Sent home from a Wales tour in disgrace, he turned his back on rugby.
One final 'side-note' - Alistair Scown, (All Black) rated; Gareth Edwards, Serge Blanco, Barry John and JPR Williams (In that order) as the greatest-ever rugby players of his time!! He was the guy in the 'Greatest try ever' game, who Phil Bennet side-stepped and made to look pedestrian, at the start of the move! A hell of a player himself too!!

Re: Chance to buy a piece of Llanelli history
I wonder if the Scarlets will put a bid in? Perhaps the supporters trust should get off their asses and pass the hat around.
It would be a pity if a private collector got it and used it as a door stop.

Re: Chance to buy a piece of Llanelli history
Gareth Jenkins apparently said after the game, "We didn't expect them to play like that".

Re: Chance to buy a piece of Llanelli history
Good post Otto. I reckon Selwyn Williams would have had 10 to 15 caps at scrum half in any other era. That blasted Edwards, holding Welsh talent back.
